Whenever there is a volcanic eruption in Iceland, Discover the World run special trips. These trips are organised on very short notice and in the past, we’ve managed to get people out to Iceland and viewing the activities at close hand, within 24-48hrs of the eruption beginning.
And 2010 may be an explosive one on this little island in the North Atlantic as many volcanoes in Iceland are overdue to erupt, including Mount Hekla in south Iceland. You can keep an eye on action via this live web cam.
At least 30 Icelandic volcanic systems have been active in the last 1100 years, accounting for over 160 eruptions. In the last 12 years, there have been eruptions under the Vatnajokull icecap and on Hekla. Nearly every kind of volcanic activity is found on the island, though fissure eruptions are most common. We run special trips to view eruptions and if you’d like to find out when they are operating, email your day and evening contact details to volcanohotline@discover-the-world.co.uk as we could be in touch at very short notice!
